LUPUS: BASICS

            Lupus is an autoimmune disease.

What does autoimmune mean?

Break the word into two parts. Auto means “self” and “immune” refers to your body’s ability to protect itself from infection, disease, or any other pesky biological thing that is floating around out there.

To put things quite simply…

If you have lupus, your body is allergic to itself.

Your body loses its ability to recognize the healthy from the unhealthy inside itself. This is the reason that each person with systemic lupus has differing symptoms.

This section has been designed to introduce you to basic information that patients with lupus, and their loved ones, need to know. The better informed you are about lupus, the better you will be able to participate in your health care.
